A ‘ silent piano' is an acoustic piano fitted with a system that makes it possible to play and to listen to oneself playing in a set of headphones - without disturbing people nearby - while retaining virtually the full feel of your instrument. A silent piano is equipped with sensors underneath the keyboard and pedals. In silent mode, the hammers are blocked by a hammer stopper about 4mm before they strike the strings and the movement of the keys are detected by the sensors underneath the keyboard. Once this movement has been measured, it is converted into a MIDI signal which can then be sent to an expander, allowing the piano to be used like a digital piano with headphones. Since the silent system works via MIDI sockets, a piano equipped in this fashion can also be connected to a computer. Colmann-France® uses the Genio system for its upright pianos and the MASTERMIDI system on upright and grand pianos.
